WANT more respect, trust and affection from your co-workers?

Wearing makeup — well done makeup — apparently can help. It increases people’s perceptions of a woman’s likability, her competence and (provided she does not overdo it) her trustworthiness, according to a new study, which also confirmed what is obvious: that cosmetics boost a woman’s attractiveness.

In a study, women were photographed wearing varying amounts of makeup, from left: barefaced, natural, professional and glamorous. Viewers considered the women wearing more makeup to be more capable and detail oriented.

It has long been known that symmetrical faces are considered more beautiful, and that people assume that handsome people are smarter and more able. There is also some evidence that women feel more confident when wearing makeup, a kind of placebo effect, said Nancy Etcoff, the study’s lead author and an assistant clinical professor of psychology at Harvard University (yes, scholars there study eyeshadow as well as stem cells). But no research, till now, has given makeup credit for people inferring that a woman was capable, reliable and easier to get along with.

The study was paid for by Procter & Gamble and it proved that people judge those who are well made up to be more trustworthy, competent and promotable compared to those who were poorly made up or wore no makeup at all.

So if you want to succeed in business, and have people view you more favorably, the importance of knowing how to properly do your makeup is evident. Poorly applied makeup; too much, the wrong colors or outdated styles or wearing none at all can have the opposite effect.

If you are re-entering the job market or bucking for a promotion, a professional makeup lesson could literally make all of the difference. Or come in to get made up for that all important job interview. Confidence is attractive and when you look good you feel good!
